Here at Pure Clean Environmental, we’re passionate about protecting the environment from dangerous chemicals and offer a wide selection of waste collection services for businesses of all sizes across the South West of England and Wales. One of our biggest services is interceptor/grease trap servicing, and it plays a vital role in ensuring deadly chemicals don’t enter the mainline water supply.
What is an interceptor?
Interceptors are also known as grease traps or oil water separators, and are a vital part of a surface water drainage system and act to prevent pollution from oils and other hydrocarbons such as oil and diesel from entering the water supply. Inside an interceptor, oil is separated from the water and is retained for specialised emptying by Pure Clean. While there are many places where interceptors are placed, they are most commonly placed where the water supply could be contaminated by oil leaks. These include car parks over 800sqm, vehicle repair garages, industrial sites such as power plants, and perhaps most common of all, petrol stations. All petrol stations are required to install interceptors and could fall foul of the law and the Environment Agency if they fail to install one.
How do interceptors work?
Interceptors work by filtering out the hydrocarbons from waste water entering the draining system. Inside a common interceptor are three chambers/tanks, the first is where petrol and diesel enter and subsequently float on the top of the drainage water. From here the water enters a second tank where any remaining or missed pollution is again left to float on the top of the water, while the third tank handles the clean waste water before entering the draining system. The pollutants are then removed from the tank during routine cleaning and maintenance. Unfortunately, when left unattended, interceptors clog up with oil and sludge, which means the third tank remains polluted, resulting in pollution entering the drainage system.
Companies found to be adding pollution to the drainage system could be hit with a hefty fine, so it’s recommended by the Environment Agency that you get your forecourt interceptors cleaned and maintained by a reputable company such as Pure Clean every 6 months in accordance with their Pollution Prevention Guideline.
