What is a septic tank and how does it work?
A septic tank, also known as cesspit tank, is a watertight container made from fiberglass, concrete, PVC or plastic, and it’s installed underground to collect and treat wastewater at a business or home that is not connected to the mains sewer system.
Septic tanks are usually made up of two compartments, with wastewater from the property being received through an inlet pipe into the first compartment. This wastewater separates over time, with solids settling at the bottom forming sludge, oils and greases rising to the top forming scum, and a layer of liquid wastewater remaining in the middle. A T-shaped outlet prevents the sludge and scum from exiting the tank. The wastewater that remains in the middle enters the second compartment, before it exits through an outlet pipe into a septic drain field, often referred to as a seepage field or leach field. The solids, oils and greases that remain in the first compartment are broken down by natural bacteria, and our septic tank servicing is what professionally removes this.
How do I know when my septic tank is full?
It’s important to have your septic tank emptied regularly, and we recommend a septic tank service at least twice a year to prevent any blockages from forming and to avoid the chance of contamination to the environment. But, how do you know when your septic tank might be full and needs emptying? Here are a few tell-tale signs to look out for:
- The septic tank may be overflowing in your garden. This will be the most obvious sign, and one that you’re really going to want to avoid, so be sure to have your tank serviced before it gets to this.
- You might notice a bad odour coming from where the septic tank is situated, or inside your property.
- You may find that the toilets inside your property take longer to flush than usual, or the sinks and showers take longer to drain. Worse still, waste from the tank might start making its way back up into your toilets.
